A DIAMOND BUYING GUIDE

The 5 C’s of Diamonds

OUR APPROACH

When it comes to choosing a diamond, I believe that the stone should resonate with you on a personal level, beyond its technical specifications. Alongside the highest quality modern cut diamonds, I offer more rare and innovative cuts, sought after coloured diamonds, romantic rose-cut diamonds and hand-cut antique diamonds. Each CB Fine Jewellery diamond is selected by hand for its unique beauty and sourced ethically to ensure they are in full compliance with UN regulations.

THE 5 C’s

At CB Fine Jewellery, each diamond is certified according to the four Cs: carat, cut, colour, and clarity. However, it’s the fifth C—character—that I believe truly sets each diamond apart. I always invite you to explore beyond the technical details and find the diamond that speaks to you personally.

For a comprehensive approach, refer to our diamond buying guide below and if you have any queries or need assistance, please get in touch – I’d be delighted to help.

THE CUT

The cut of a diamond is crucial; it determines how the stone interacts with light. A well-cut diamond sparkles brilliantly, with each facet – acting like a mirror – reflecting the diamond cutters expertise and dedication. As light dances across its polished surfaces, the angles and cuts determine how much brilliance – or light – is returned to the eye. This intricate interplay is what enhances a diamond’s beauty and creates that captivating “Wow” factor.

THE CARAT

The term “carat” originates from the carob seeds used in ancient trading to weigh diamonds. Today, it represents a standard unit of measure for a diamond’s weight. The carat weight contributes to a diamond’s value alongside cut, colour and clarity – but I also believe the true value of a diamond lies in its unique character. Some of the diamonds I’ve featured in the most beautiful designs may have lower technical specifications, yet their beauty is truly exceptional and the result is extraordinarily lovely.

THE COLOUR

Diamonds range from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow), with colourless stones being the most rare and sought after. The closer a diamond is to being colourless, the more remarkable and rare it is.

THE CLARITY

Clarity refers to the presence of imperfections, known as inclusions, within a diamond when viewed under 10x magnification. It’s worth noting that the majority of diamonds have inclusions of varying degrees. The clarity of a diamond is graded based on the visibility and location of the inclusions. The highest clarity ratings denote minimal imperfections, making such diamonds exceptionally rare and priced accordingly. Understanding clarity is essential for anyone looking to assess diamond quality effectively.

THE CHARACTER

At CB Fine Jewellery, I also believe in the importance of “character’—the fifth C. Each diamond has its own unique charm, and I encourage you to look beyond the technical specifications. Choose a diamond that speaks to your heart, ensuring it resonates with your personal style and story.
